4241 Dashboard & Control Panel Operations

re wagner - 2/1/2005

4241 is a Colorado Forest Service vehicle on loan to Jamestown for awhile. It has been located in Gold Hill for the past several years, but now they have nice new(er) trucks so they gave it to us to take care of for a while! It started life as an Army 6x6 in 1952. It is maintained by the forest service so we just need to keep it clean and ready to go.

Some facts:

  1. It has an 800 gallon water tank.
  2. It carries a large porta-pond.
  3. It has a 6 cylinder pump engine with 1 1/2" outlets on each side. Chris told us they have attached nozzles on these outlets and drive along the edge of a fire spraying on the run!
  4. It has an auxiliary hose and nozzle on a reel on the driver's side of the truck.
  5. It has no roof, heater, wipers that works, or any other human comfort accessory!
  6. The filler cap gasket leaks and you get wet a lot! If using foam you get foamed a lot.
  7. Putting chains on this beast is a beastly task! All axles must be chained and all tires as well. Takes an hour and half if we know what we are doing! You guess!!!
  8. Brakes have been redone and are a bit grabby. Ask Jim as he rode with me up Left Hand!!!!
  9. Chris sprays the tires each year to protect them from rot. Forgot to ask what he used...
  10. All three axles are driven and it has an automatic transmission!
